On our last episode of The Woman's Show series 1, we discussed marriage; Cathy Kiuna and Mercy Kagendo were our featured brides. Cathy speaks of her 2 months courtship while we follow Mercy preparing for her wedding to a Dutchman after 18 months of courtship.
Our studio guests are Joan Kamau who highlights the importance of sex in a marriage, Cathleen Gitau divorced by 26 and Benjaline Akenga whose husband had an affair and they are now happily married. These three women tell Sheba Hirst how to make a marriage work!
Joan Kamau, has been married for 7 years after courting for 18months, she believes that one can never really know their spouse but developing a friendship is what helps living with someone become tolerable. One shouldn't wear a mask or be who they are not. Children also change the relationship within a marriage, she was not comfortable with canning her children to instill discipline but her husband was. There were also family meeting from her relatives where they said she goes alone. She had to fight for her husband to be accommodated in the family as well as adopt canning as a way to discipline her kids.
Infidelity had not occurred in their marriage but she says there are some things that should just never happen. People should communicate on finances, sexual and emotional affairs.
Our second guest Cathleen Gitau went to the states to study in the foreign land she met a man who was very good to her became her friend and showed her around. He was handsome, they liked the same music, he was a strong personality, very sexy and their relationship became sexual very quickly, and soon they got married. Most of the excitement was from the fact that they shared different cultures and they were so different personalities. These however were the same reasons that led to their break up, his boldness turned to arguments and later physical abuse. He underwent anger management counseling but he soon reverted to his abusive ways, she filed for a divorce and concentrated on healing. Looking back now she says they had not taken time to be friends and their affair died out when the sexual chemistry went down.
Benjaline Akenga who has been married for 20 years stunned the audience members when she said that her husband had an affair that led to the death of their child.
The stress of her husbands neglect and infidelity led to Benjaline having a still birth. Benjaline and her husband are now together and minister to couples. She said her friends spoke to them and advised then to stick together, her husband was remorseful and after counseling they re united and are now happily married. Benjaline says that women should never walk out of their marriages instead work out to seek help and try to involve your partner in the counseling.
